New Furniture Brand caters to Passionate Outdoor Lifestyle Participants And Design Enthusiasts.
San Diego, CA (March 12, 2007) - Maku Furnishings, the Southern California manufacturer of contemporary home furnishings focused around an outdoor, lifestyle, and design heritage announced today the debut of the Maku Outdoor Collection, an assemblage of multi-functional outdoor furnishings inspired by the collective travels of action sports athletes, iconic lifestyle personalities and design enthusiasts.
Founded by action sports industry veteran Johnny West and business partner J. Michael Johnson, Maku Furnishings consists of authentic and unique home lifestyle products that are designed to expand the organic indoor and outdoor 'living space' into a sanctuary of relaxation and comfort intertwined with the lifestyle we live. Maku converges contemporary designs utilizing natural materials and a mix of traditional hand crafted artistry with modern manufacturing technology.
"For over 15 years, I have been developing, branding, marketing and selling products that have helped shape generations X and Y. The icons of today's modern generations are the surfers, snowboarders, and skateboarders that live every day of their lives with passion and verve. When I look at the home furnishings industry I see an opportunity to share that passion for living by bringing a more relevant product and story to the consumer," stated Johnny West, CEO and co-founder.
Maku Furnishings debut collection features an assortment of home and outdoor furnishing that follow the fresh perspective and ideals behind the brand.
Multi-functional and multi-environmental seating and dining - Focused and contemporary yet understated in design to reflect the diversity and adaptability of today's in the moment consumers. Featuring an array of dining tables, chairs, chaise lounges, deep seating sectionals, sofas and lounge chairs that all expand the indoor living space out.
Greeting and entry - The first impression is always the most important. We believe that your front door says a lot about who you are. With that in mind we have used the finest exotic woods available in Southeast Asia to create entries that will leave a lasting impression. From our surf inspired "Stringer" and "T-band" doors with a combination of Teak, Mahogany, Sonokeling, and Nyotah to traditional solid teak interior and exterior doors featuring frangipani hand carvings.
Showcasing the finest sustainable plantation grown teak (Tectona grandis) we have gone to great lengths in establishing strategic partnerships that allow ample wood availability with minimal impact to the fragile Indonesian eco system. The wood is of the highest quality, with each plank painstakingly examined for irregularities and flaws prior to manufacturing resulting in a consistent warm golden honey aesthetic throughout each piece.
To further our quest to create the finest furniture on the market today all Maku Furnishings are kiln dried to minimum of 8-10% moisture content under very strict manufacturing guidelines, feature world class Hafele hardware combined with dovetail joinery and are expertly finished to create a masterpiece for the contemporary living space.
Through co-founder West's 15-plus years of involvement in the action sports industry the founders know that authenticity and credibility are tantamount to a brand's success. We've enlisted internationally known surfers Rizal Tanjung and Kassia Meador, along with top-ranked US snowboarder Keir Dillon, as lifestyle ambassadors, to actively give input on new designs and branding directions that will shape future Maku offerings.
Maku is also making a concerted effort to support those who have inspired and supported the launch of the brand. Through our partnership with One Percent for the Planet (www.onepercentfortheplanet.org), Maku is joining forces with other responsible businesses to help ensure that we leave the world a better place than when we entered it. In addition, Maku will be working with communities throughout Southeast Asia, in particular Bali and Java, to help educate the young people of a land that has long been a favorite destination of the global surf community.
Maku Furnishing's inaugural collection will be available to consumers in April 2007 through influential specialty retailers such as the Grounded Garden Shop in Encinitas, CA and online distribution. The full range of Maku products will be showcased during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) May 2007.
